Whether you’re selling your caravan, buying one, or just want peace of mind before your next trip, getting a caravan gas certificate from a fully licensed gas fitter makes all the difference.

At Caravan Gas Man, we provide mobile caravan gas certificates across Greater Brisbane, Redlands, Moreton Bay and surrounding areas in South East Queensland. And we want you to understand exactly why the qualifications of the person signing your certificate matter so much.

Not All Caravan Gas Certificates Are Equal

The Queensland Government Petroleum and Gas Inspectorate ensures that caravan manufacturers and gas fitters meet the highest safety standards in Australia. But here’s something most caravan owners don’t know: there are two very different licences that allow someone to issue a caravan gas certificate in Queensland — and they are not equal.

Licence 1: Full Gas Work Licence

A full Gas Work Licence requires a gas fitter to complete a full apprenticeship, earn a Certificate III in Gas Fitting, and train under a fully licensed professional. This licence allows the holder to install, remove, repair, service, test and certify gas systems on anything that runs on gas — stoves, hot water systems, fridges, heaters and full caravan gas installations.

Licence 2: Gas Work Licence (Servicing and Caravan Certification)

This is the “lite” version. It requires less than 10 days of actual training and just 20 hours of practical experience on a real or simulated caravan. Holders can only service appliances (inspect, clean, adjust, tighten fittings), connect test equipment and read results, disconnect and reconnect appliances for servicing, and certify gas systems for transfer of ownership.

Critically, they cannot install, remove or alter any gas systems.

This distinction matters enormously when something is actually wrong with your caravan.

The Hidden Problem With Underqualified Inspectors

Here’s where caravan owners get caught out. If an inspector holds only the servicing licence and finds a problem during your certificate inspection, they legally cannot fix it. They must issue you a defect notice, take your money, and leave. You then have to call a fully qualified gas fitter to fix the issue, then call the original inspector back for a re-check, paying again.

It gets worse. Many holders of the servicing licence have been trained only on the current Australian Standard AS5601.2:2020 (effective April 2021). If your caravan was built before that date, they’ll incorrectly try to apply the current standard rather than the one that applied when your van was manufactured. Australian Standards are not retrospective, but underqualified inspectors often don’t know that.

A Real Example From Our Team

Recently, a customer in the Greater Brisbane area called us after receiving a defect notice for a missing test point. Fair enough — but the inspector had missed far more serious issues: a missing flue, incorrect appliance clearances, a fridge not room-sealed, and most dangerously, a fridge burner detached from the flue tube and just lying on the floor. One spark from lighting the fridge could have turned a family holiday into a disaster.

This is exactly why we only employ fully licensed gas fitters at Caravan Gas Man.

Red Flags to Watch For When Booking a Caravan Gas Certificate

Before you book anyone to inspect your caravan, watch out for:

  • Pre-payment required — how can they quote before assessing the job?
  • Fixed 30-minute time slots — a proper gas inspection takes as long as it takes
  • Dual gas and roadworthy certification — jack of all trades, master of none
  • Not a fully licensed gas fitter — always check their licence before they touch your van

Caravan Gas Certificates: Why Who Signs It Matters

Always ask two questions before anyone starts work:

  1. Are you fully licensed to do this job?
  2. Can you address any issues that arise on the spot?

If the answer to either is no, call a real gas fitter.
