What is a Caravan Gas Certificate?

A caravan gas certificate is a legal document from a licensed Queensland gas fitter that confirms your caravan’s gas system, including appliances, regulators, hoses, and connections, is installed correctly, has no leaks, and is safe to use. It also shows your system meets Australian Standard AS/NZS 5601.2.

When do I need a Caravan Gas Certificate?

If your caravan has any permanently installed gas appliances — think fridges, cooktops, hot water systems, or heaters. You’ll need a caravan gas certificate/compliance certificate when
– Buying or selling a caravan, camper, or motorhome
– Moving from another state or territory and transferring your registration
– Your registration has lapsed for more than three months
– Passing it on to a family member (though if you’re transferring to your spouse, you’re off the hook!)
– Whenever you make any changes, upgrades, or replacements to gas appliances in your caravan

Does my caravan actually need a certificate?

Only if it has a permanently fixed gas supply. If your van has no fixed gas lines, appliances, or regulator — you’re all good, no certificate needed!
But if it does have fixed gas, the certificate is mandatory — even if it was recently serviced or maintained.

How long does a Queensland caravan gas certificate last?

Just 3 months — so it’s worth timing your inspection close to when you actually need it!
It’s also a one-use document, so once it’s been used for a sale or transfer, that’s it. Any future transactions will need a brand new certificate.

What does the inspection cover?

A licensed caravan gas fitter will check the entire gas system against AS/NZS 5601.2, including:
– Two-stage regulator with over pressure protection (OPP)
– Gas pressure test point
– Gas compliance plate from a licensed fitter
– All appliances certified to Australian standards (AGA or QGA)
– Leak test at required pressure
– Ventilation — upper and lower vents must be clear and unobstructed
– Check all gas supply

What if my caravan fails the inspection – Our difference

Do I need a roadworthy certificate as well?

Yes — a gas certificate only covers the gas system. If your caravan is between 750kg and 4,500kg (ATM), you’ll also need a roadworthy/safety certificate before sale or transfer. Caravans under 750kg only need a Queensland Transport Self Assessment form, but the gas certificate is still required if fixed gas is present.

Are certificates from other states accepted?

Yes. Interstate gas certificates issued by licensed installers in other states are accepted in Queensland for the purposes when the vehicle is new.

How long does an Inspection take?

For most compliant vans, you’re looking at under an hour — we’re in, we’re done, and you’re certified.
